EA will drop FIFA license in 2023.
Electronic Arts soccer games have been FIFA branded since the inception of the series, but EA is taking a new approach in the coming year with the introduction of EA Sports FC. While the name may be changing, it doesn’t sound like much else will. Electronic Arts will continue to publish the yearly sports title albeit with the different naming conventions.
What is EA Sports FC?
For those that are unaware, “FC” means Football Club. The meaning is quite literal and its used to denote that a group of players are a football (soccer) centric team. EA Sports FC literally translates to EA Sports Football Club. The naming convention shouldn’t change much for the EA Sports titles. According to EA, this will be a new independent platform for the developers who say that this is “symbol of change” for the franchise.
“We’re excited to work with a large and increasing number of partners to expand to new authentic experiences that bring joy, inclusivity and immersion to a global community of fans,” reads an excerpt from Electronic Arts.
It had been previously reported that FIFA and Electronic Arts had come to a disagreement in the financial terms of the licensing deal between the two companies. FIFA had been seeking a quarter of a billion dollars per year to grant the FIFA licensing rights to EA. This year, FIFA fans can expect more of the same in terms of what to expect from FIFA 23 as EA Sports FC will not be revealed until next Summer.
Will EA Sports FC be any different than FIFA games? If EA’s track record is anything to go by, this will likely be just a name change for the franchise. Though it’s hard to tell what yearly changes may be in store when 2023 rolls around, EA Sports FC may very well introduce some interesting new gameplay ideas to the mix.
